What is here attempted is to give a plain account, for the benefit of the average reader, of the rise of the Cistercian Order, and of its establishment in Yorkshire- of the fortunes of the eight Yorkshire houses in poverty and in power- of the causes and events which led to their suppression- and of their actual fate in 1535-1540. I have relied throughout on the authorities referred to in an appended list: all are readily available to those who desire a more intimate and detailed acquaintance with the subject.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
